NURSE PRACTITIONER

Full-Time (Monday to Friday, days)

Start date:        As soon as possible


The nurse practitioner is a member of a dynamic, interdisciplinary harm reduction team which provides holistic care to individuals who are positive or at-risk for hepatitis C in a community-based not-for-profit clinic. The nurse practitioner manages patients in collaboration with physicians for common disorders and diseases found in the primary care of this at-risk population. As well, the NP participates in integrated research to improve the overall care of this population and serves as a mentor and educator for health professional students of various disciplines.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Patient Care

  • Works within the scope of practice set for a nurse practitioner to provide primary care to patients.
  • Considers environmental, social, psychological and medical risk factors (social determinants of health) in a manner that can be understood by patients and is appropriate for their situation.
  • Works with and refers to other members of the care team and other health care professionals to ensure patients receive comprehensive, competent and appropriate health care.
  • Acts as a health advocate for patients.
  • Assesses and prescribes appropriate treatment for opioid use disorder as well as other substance dependencies.
  • Collaborates with the RECAP team and the patient to develop a plan of care to best suit their needs.


Community Health Promotion, Education and Outreach

  • Collaborates with the RECAP team to conduct outreach clinics aimed at improving the accessibility of care.
  • Participates in special events for community partners/programs to increase awareness of services available to this population.
  • Works with the RECAP team and other community partners to develop, facilitate and evaluate new programs aimed at improving the lives of the population served.


Administrative and Organizational Responsibilities

  • Maintains accurate records of patient’ visits and encounters in a very timely and comprehensive manner.
  • Ensures up-to-date tracking mechanisms for important clinic metrics in collaboration with the Operations Director.
  • Adheres to all RECAP policies and procedures.
  • Drives development and maintenance of clinical policies and procedures in keeping with best available collaboration with the RECAP team.
  • Ensures effective use of working hours through application of time management skills.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to change practices and processes as needed to support effective use of the time of all members of the RECAP team.
  • Assists with other administrative, operations and clinical duties as needed including maintaining a clean clinic environment, ordering supplies, answering phones, faxing and filing.


Research

  • Participates in the implementation and ongoing requirements of research and quality improvement initiatives which may include tracking of metrics, clinician completed research forms, obtaining informed consent for research participation, functioning as a member of industry-sponsored and grant-funded research initiatives.
  • Participates in research-oriented education and training, as needed.
  • Identifies, discusses and develops research questions and quality improvement metrics to better the care of RECAP patients.


EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

Basic Education and Experience

  • Registered and in good standing as a Nurse Practitioner with the Nurses Association of New Brunswick OR registered as a Nurse Practitioner in another province/territory in Canada with the eligibility to be registered in New Brunswick
  • Three to five years nursing experience, preferably in a community, public health, mental health or addictions setting.
  • Experience and interest in supporting marginalized patients with substance use disorder, mental health and complex psycho-social issues.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • A commitment to a team-based clinic environment focused on maximizing limited resources for the betterment of the patients, fellow staff, and the organization.
  • Adaptable to a growing and continuously changing organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work regularly and on time.
  • Excellent organizational skills and above average attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with patients as well as with community partners and other health professionals.
  • Minimum intermediate proficiency in the use of computers and relevant software.
  • Able to physically and mentally meet the demands of the position.


Salary & Benefits 

  • $48.00-$50.00/hour
  • 3 weeks of paid vacation and paid sick time. 
  • Annual NP license renewal cost covered.
